Welcome to 31

Yesterday was my 31st birthday. Thirty-one feels much like thirty. Funny thing.

After supper at Boston Pizza (my order: crispy chicken pecan salad, without the pecans) with my mom, dad, stepmom and awesome couple-friends, we came back to the house for cake. My birthday cake was a strawberry shortcake cake made by a local supermarket bakery, SO good!

The day was hot and sunny and wonderful. For a midday adventure, HOTGI and I took a trip over to the curling rink where he is a member (honestly, I can't believe we were on the ice in August!!) and spent a little while throwing rocks. Everything he threw, I tried to copycat. I think I did okay and it felt great to have my feet on the ice. Even better was leaving the rink in shorts and sandals!

I want to offer great big thank-yous to all the wonderful people who sent me messages today wishing me well on my birthday. It means a great deal to read the kind words of people who care. I felt like a very special Beth.

HOTGI and I are still on vacation and the weather forecast couldn't be nicer so I look forward to logging some relaxation time in the backyard!

The only bad thing about carrot cake is the name

To me, there is nothing more mouth-wateringly perfect than a piece (cough*manypieces*cough) of moist carrot cake with cream cheese icing. No nuts if-you-please. I adore carrot cake to the point where it was the flavour I chose for the bottom tier of my wedding cake (I’ll talk about that brilliant creation someday). Some people turn their noses up at it. I don’t understand those people. Carrot cake (despite its healthy sounding moniker) is a rich and decadent dessert that is the perfect balance of sweet and spice.

Today, we are celebrating the birthdays of two coworkers in my department with an incredible carrot cake made by another coworker. She is a gifted baker and we all love when she brings in a container of treats to share. Actually, she and I work in a department with six guys so the second there is something homemade put out to share its like throwing bread at pigeons. Their heads cock to the side and they scuttle over to grab up a piece. Of course I’m talking about birds here, not the guys… right?

Sweet little pieces of carrot cake heaven

At any rate, I have already nommed one piece of the carrot cake, but the rest of it is sitting on the desk behind me and I swear it was made with gravitational pull (or crack) because I can’t stop thinking about it and when someone walks by, I can smell it. I am jonesing for another piece however my wobbly-bits do NOT need any more insulation so I am trying to restrain myself. At the very least, wait a bit longer so I don’t embarrass myself.

Hmm… I think enough time has passed. Now excuse me while I take my carb-loving, ever-growing behind over to the remaining cake and bask in its awesomeness before I gobble down another piece.

PS – Happy Birthday Scott & Chris!

Mmmm cupcakes

He-of-the-good-ideas isn't a huge fan of cake, however he does enjoy a rainbow-bit cake (yep, mix from a box!) so that is what I made as a sweet celebratory treat for his birthday!!

Mmmm candy sprinkles!!

LOVE my cupcake stand! Bought it an an auction last fall :)

Oh a cupcake is such a sweet delicious treat!

Happy Birthday to mah Hubby!!

Today, He-of-the-good-ideas has a birthday.

He is my sweetheart, my rock, my cheerleader, my confidant... the most sweet and wonderful man and I am blessed to call him my friend and my husband.

He asked for one thing for his birthday. He never asks for anything for his birthday. But this year he sent me an email from work saying he would really like Apple TV for his birthday gift. I knew nothing of what it was or what it did, but he said he really wanted it so I decided he should have it! I went online and ordered it right away and it was in my hands 4 business days later!

So today after we got home from work, I gave him a card with a clue, that led him to his first gift (a new cutting board) that I had taped another clue on that led him to the wrapped Apple TV hidden in the shower. He's a very happy guy and I'm really glad he loves his presents!

Happy birthday darlin! I love you!
